‘Content Block’ and How You Can Overcome it

Written by Milda Rowlinson | Jul 11, 2017 1:37:22 PM

Anyone who has run a blog (be it for themselves or a company) can attest to the fact that sometimes the gears just grind to a halt. No matter what the theme is, sometimes you just find yourself staring at a blank Word document, your eyes slowly beginning to water. But it doesn’t have to be this way. In fact, if you find yourself in this position, stop. You can overcome this blogstacle. You just need a change of tactics.

Start by having a walk around. Get yourself away from the screen for a moment. Then come back, and re-strategise. Are you part of a team? Sure, your creativity may be running low today, but your co-workers may be firing on all cylinders. Don’t be ashamed to ask for inspiration – one simple question could save you hours of painstaking work.

It’s also a good idea to work out exactly what your limitations are. Speak to your supervisor (if you have one) and see if you can create a spectrum of all things appropriate to write about, what areas and subjects you can cover and what to avoid. It should help you to discover ideas you haven’t before, and can save you from becoming uncertain about whether or not any future blogs are appropriate.

And remember – if you’ve written tons of blogs already, you may want to try looking backwards instead of forwards. Okay, you want something original and different, but that doesn’t mean you can’t use a point from a previous blog for a starting point. If you’ve written a ‘top tips’ blog, for example, maybe see if one of those tips could be developed further; there may be enough potential there for an entire new blog in itself.

There’s always something to write about. But you won’t find that something without following the right paths. Rest assured in the fact that staring into the abyss and demanding your brain to think will seldom result in a good idea. Take a step back, realise your limitations and don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you can apply this, you’ll be hammering out great content faster than you’ll know what to do with.
