4 Great Social Media Tips for Directors

If you’re a director of a company, chances are you’ve got your hands full – a lot. You’ve got a hundred obligations to meet, five more meetings to attend and you haven’t even had your morning coffee yet. You’re probably thinking Facebook can wait – but if your company isn’t properly utilising social media, you’re missing out on a huge opportunity for growth.

  1. Ask the millennials
Not to say you aren’t up to date with the latest social media trends and platforms, but chances are you’ve got some serious millennial talent in charge of your digital marketing. Young people have been raised on social media, and understand how to communicate effectively with their peers on these platforms. They are also on the cusp of emerging trends, and can help you monopolise on them before your competitors do.

  1. Think about what you post
Remember: If your personal social media account is about you as a director and not just you as a person, what you should post about changes significantly. Your audience is no longer school friends and family: it’s employers, clients, partners and shareholders. Create appropriate posts that shed you and your business in a good light, and avoid anything negative such as complaining or arguing publicly.

  1. Keep it going
Posting something every couple of weeks won’t get you anywhere – you need to keep an active online presence to avoid being forgotten about. It doesn’t have to be time consuming either – occasional posts about your business’ products or services, updates about company milestones and curated content will all do the trick.

  1. Be outgoing
It’s not all about you – and that’s an opportunity. Instead of just being active on your own page, see who else you can reach out to. Facebook and LinkedIn present a great opportunity to actively engage with other businesses and clients. It’s a good way to not only share your two cents, but also to showcase your values to the world.

Social media really doesn’t have to take up all your time and it certainly doesn’t have to be difficult. As a director, you won’t find a more effective opportunity to showcase your business. And if you really can’t find time to fit that Facebook post into your schedule, just give a trustworthy employee access and let them do it.
