Business Qualities We Can Learn from Mothers

This month, in recognition of Mother’s Day on 11th March, we’re celebrating mothers everywhere by honouring them for providing us with support and guidance in life. Here are 6 business qualities we can learn from mothers:

Be willing to try

To be a great leader, you don’t always have to ooze confidence and knowledge; you just have to have a willingness to try. Nobody is perfect, including those at the top of their career ladder, as we all have areas to improve upon. But, as long as you show enthusiasm, work hard and are willing to give things a go, there’s no reason why you can’t be an expert in your field in the future.  

Learn to have patience

Patience is a virtue. Because the world of business is such a fast-paced environment, many of us have forgotten how to be patient. There is a difference in being patient and in being lazy, as patience involves different disciplines such as being able to put up with an annoying co-worker, or deal with difficult situations. Patience is a great skill we can learn from mothers.

Don’t be selfish

Work may seem like a selfish place, and to a certain extent it is, especially when it comes to your career and doing what is best for you. However, there is a way to go about being selfish without causing upset in the workplace. ‘Team’ exists for a reason, and it’s important to take into account the feelings of your colleagues.

Honesty goes a long way

Honesty is the best policy. Admitting you made a mistake shows that you accept it was your responsibility; you can then work towards making it right, or move on. Honest communication in the workplace is so crucial as to not create tension, confusion and a hostile environment. Plus, owning up to your mistakes makes you seem more trustworthy, as co-workers will know you’ll tell them the truth about how a project is going: good news or bad.

Trust your instinct

As the saying goes, mothers always know best, and that’s because they trust their instinct and tell us to do so too. Whatever it is that’s concerning you, whether it’s a project at work or accepting a new job offer, trust your instinct and listen to your mum – everything will work out just right.

So, when you’re thanking your mother on the 11th for all the hard work she’s put into raising you, consider thanking her for the lessons you can apply to your career too.
